Title : The Effect of Using Duolingo Application on Students' Grammatical
Mastery at The Eighth Grade of MTs Al-Ihsaniyah Muaro Jambi
Grammar is one of the most critical aspects of language learning. Grammar
describes short words and word combinations that form one sentence in any
language. Unfortunately, mastering grammar in English is a challenge for students.
Students struggle with grammar that involves tenses, plurality, articles,
prepositions, and pronouns. A previous study found that the Duolingo application
could be used to learn new vocabulary and English grammar. Therefore, this
research aimed to analyze the influence of Duolingo on the grammar mastery of
second-grade students at MTS Al-Ihsaniyah Muaro Jambi. This research used a
quantitative quasi-experimental approach with a pre-test and post-test control group
design. The researcher employed grammar tests in the form of multiple-choice
questions consisting of 16 questions for pre-test and post-test. The data analysis
technique was a paired sample t-test and an independent sample t-test. Research
findings showed a difference in the average students' grammar mastery scores
between the experimental and control classes on the post-test. The experimental got
a mean of 82,13 on the post-test, while the control group got a mean of 71,62. These
results show the influence of using Duolingo on students' grammar skills. This
research contributes to the discourse on using mobile-assisted language learning
(MALL) to enhance junior high school students' grammar mastery.
