Ecranization is the process of transforming written literary works into visual
media, such as films. This adaptation often results in changes to narrative elements,
characterizations, and themes. The transformation of Snow White (1812) into Snow
White and the Huntsman (2012) reflects shifts shaped by modern values and
cinematic demands. This study aims to identify and analyze the narrative changes
that occur during the adaptation process. This study addresses these changes by
applying Pamusuk Eneste’s ecranization theory and comparative literature
approach within a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected through
documentation techniques, including close reading of the fairy tale and film
viewing. Data were analyzed by comparing the intrinsic elements of the texts
through three primary processes: subtraction, addition, and variation. The findings
reveal that Snow White isreimagined as a strong and courageous leader, contrasting
her passive portrayal in the original fairy tale. Ravenna, the antagonist, is given
greater psychological depth, while the film adds political conflicts, war scenes, and
new characters such as Finn. Meanwhile, certain repetitive elements from the fairy
tale are reduced. Overall, the analysis shows that the film does not merely visualize
the fairy tale but reinterprets it, embedding new social values such as women's
empowerment and resistance against tyranny, making the narrative more relevant
and meaningful to contemporary audiences.
