Tittle : The Effect of Self-assessment on students’ writing ability at

Junior High School 17 Jambi City
The aim of this research is to find out the effect of self-assessment on
students’ writing ability before and after the treatment and the difference between
those who are taught by using self-assessment strategy and those who are not.

This research was quantitative research and it was conducted by using quasy-
experimental design with nonequivalent control group design which two classes

as Experimental Class and Control Class. The population and sample of this
research is the students at the State Junior High School 17 Jambi City. All of them
are involved in this research, which consisted 58 students. The result of this
research shows that there was significant effect on students’ writing after being
taught through Self-assessment. This could be seen from the T- test result which

showed that the students mean score of pre-test in experiment class self-
assessment was 43.51 and the mean score of post-test 78.62. Meanwhile, the mean

score of pre-test in experiment class use word wall strategy was 43.06 and the
mean score post-test was 69.34. In the value sig (2-tailed) was 0.000 which was
lower than 0.05. The value of t test was 5.847 and df was 56. The t table
obtained is compared to t table either at 5%. At value t table was 2.144. Based on
the table, it can be analyzed that t0 is higher than t table either at level 5%. In
other words, we can read 5.847>2.144. So the researcher can conclude that there

was significant difference of writing between the students who were taught self-
assessment and those who were not.
