The researcher analyzed behavior of the main character in the film “A Man Called
Otto”. The researcher chose this term because the film addressed contemporary
issues, that is the tendency for people to end their lives by suicide when they are
dealing with personal issues like love and lack of support. The primary objectives
of this research were to: (1) comprehend Otto's personality structures; and (2),
using Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory of personality, determine Otto's
defense mechanisms. The researchers used qualitative research using a descriptive
methodology to address the study issues. The researchers used the film from
Apple TV as the data source. The data collection techniques included watching
the film, reading the script, and taking notes. The analysis focused on Otto's
personality structures which were id, ego and superego and the defense
mechanisms used to overcome the internal conflicts. The research aimed to
comprehensively understand the dynamics of Otto's personality and relate it to
human life in general. The research result (1) indicated that Otto's personality had
been dominated by the id, leading to an imbalance within him. (2) To address this
internal conflict, Otto used defense mechanisms such as denial, projection, and
sublimation, with a predominance of sublimation. These findings provided a
deeper understanding of the complexity of human personality in facing various
life challenges.
