Title : Students’ Motivation Factors in Choosing English Department at
UIN Jambi
This research investigates the motivations of English Education and at Universitas
Islam Negeri (UIN) Jambi in choosing English as their major. The research employs a
qualitative methodology, utilizing semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis to
explore both intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors, including personal interests,
educational environment, career aspirations, and social influences. The sample comprises
ten sixth-semester students selected through purposive sampling, with criteria students
who have selected a specific area of concentration and consistently demonstrate sustained
interest in English language studies. The findings reveal a dynamic interplay between
initial extrinsic motivations, such as familial expectations or career prospects, and the
gradual development of intrinsic interest in English studies, often catalyzed by supportive
faculty and curriculum design. This research underscores the importance of tailored
educational strategies that foster both types of motivation to enhance student engagement
and academic outcomes in English programs at UIN Jambi.
Keywords: Motivation, English Education, UIN Jambi, Qualitative Research, Extrinsic
