Arlean Febiola 2024 : The Survival of The Main Character in The Novel
Bird Box by Josh Malerman

In life, there is something called surviving and fighting to live. In the existence
of life, in nature there must be a struggle for life, whether humans, animals or even
plants must experience struggle and defense for survival. In this research, the
researcher's main objective is to identify and find out; 1). How the main character in
the novel Bird Box (Mallorie) struggles to survive in very difficult circumstances. 2).
The psychological impact that occurred on Mallorie after the mysterious incident in
the novel Bird Box by Josh Malerman. To achieve these research questions,
researchers used theories to analyze the data, namely about survival by Kramler, K
(2004), and the Psychological Impact Theory by Albert Bandura (1997). This
research method is qualitative research. In collecting data, researchers used
documentation techniques. The technique used to analyze data in this research is
descriptive technique. In this study, there were 19 data results in this study. In this
research, it was found that; (1) the main character in the novel Bird Box, to achieve
survival, Malorie must survive by covering her eyes with a cloth so that she cannot
see the situation outside which could threaten her life. (2) Psychological impacts that
occurs on Malorie is; (a) observation learning, where Malorie tries to learn by
observing her surroundings, such as listening to the sounds she hears so that she can
recognize and be aware of the sounds she hears. (b) psychological impact that occurs
on Malorie is Self-Efficacy which refers to a person's belief in their own abilities. In
this impact, Malorie tries to believe in her own beliefs and her ability to survive and
do something. (c) Self Determination. In this theory, what happens only focuses on
the motivation of the main character who tries and can do something that makes
Malorie's wishes come true, such as the desire to continue to survive, and Malorie's
desire to care and want to save her two children (Boy and Girl). (d) psychological
impact on Malorie is Reinforcement, which refers to increasing behavior and
motivation in oneself. In this novel, Malorie gives praise and motivation to other
people, especially her two children, to always try to fight and survive for their
survival.
