Title: The Correlation Among Students’ self-esteem, Anxiety, and Speaking
Performance in English Education Study Program of UIN Sts Jambi
This research aims to investigate the correlation among students’ self-
esteem, anxiety, and their speaking performance in English. The study was
conducted using a quantitative correlational design involving 30 students from the
English Education Study Program. Data were collected through questionnaires
measuring students’ self-esteem and anxiety levels, and through performance
assessments using a speaking rubric to evaluate speaking ability. The results of the
Pearson Product Moment correlation analysis indicated that there was no significant
correlation between self-esteem and speaking performance (r = –0.306, p = 0.100),
no significant correlation between anxiety and speaking performance (r = 0.016, p
= 0.932), and no significant correlation between self-esteem and anxiety (r = 0.042,
p = 0.825). These results imply that neither self-esteem nor anxiety has a
statistically significant relationship with students’ speaking performance in this
context. The findings suggest that other factors, such as speaking-specific anxiety,
linguistic competence, academic pressure, and classroom environment, may play a
more crucial role in influencing speaking performance. It is recommended that
future researchers explore these variables to better understand what affects
students’ oral communication skills in English.
