This research is motivated by differences in how male and female students
perceive humor in animated films, influenced by social, cultural, linguistic, and
gender factors. Luca was chosen because it contains various types of humor—
slapstick, situational, verbal, and visual—as well as relevant teenage themes. The
lack of studies examining humor reception based on gender in educational settings
was the main reason for conducting this research. The objectives are (1) to
identify the types of humor in Luca perceived as relevant by male and female
students at MA PPM Al Kinanah Jambi, and (2) to analyze the factors influencing
differences in humor reception. The study applies Pragmatics (Yule, 2021) as the
theoretical framework. The kind of the research with data collected through
observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. Content analysis,
data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing as the technique of data
analysis. Informants were selected using purposive sampling, consisting of 124
students (62 male and 62 female). Data analysis involved data reduction, data
presentation, and conclusion drawing, supported by descriptive content analysis.
The findings show: (1) visual humor (53 occurrences) was most appreciated,
followed by slapstick (50), situational (49), and verbal (17); (2) male students
tended to prefer slapstick and verbal humor, which are physical and spontaneous,
while female students preferred situational and visual humor focused on social
interaction and emotional context. These differences were influenced by gender,
age, language, and socio-cultural norms.
