This research discusses the comparative use of slang among Millennial Generation,
Generation Z, and Generation Alpha on TikTok. Many users may not fully realize
the functions and forms of slang and how they differ across generations. Therefore,
the aim of this study is to identify the functions and types of slang used by each
generation and to analyze their similarities and differences in digital
communication on TikTok. To answer the research questions, the researcher used
Allan and Burridge’s theory to classify the functions and types of slang. This study
adopts a qualitative descriptive approach. The data were collected through
documentation methods by observing videos and comments from TikTok, focusing
on slang usage among the three generations. The analysis was conducted using
content analysis techniques. The results of this research reveal two key findings.
First, the most dominant function of slang across all generations is to express
impression, with Generation Z and Generation Alpha showing the highest
percentages. Second, the most frequently used slang type varies by generation:
Millennials mostly use flippant slang, Generation Z prefers imitative slang, and
Generation Alpha dominantly uses fresh and creative slang. These findings
highlight how generational identity and digital culture shape the use of language on
social media platforms.
