This research analyzes the illocutionary speech acts used by the main character in
the film Greenland (2020), directed by Ric Roman Waugh. The film tells the
struggle of John Garrity and his family to survive and seek refuge as Earth is
threatened by comet fragments. The research aims to identify the types and
functions of illocutionary speech acts, drawing on Austin‘s (1962) and Searle‘s
(1969) speech act theory and Leech‘s (1983) theory of illocutionary functions. A
qualitative method was employed with data taken from the film‘s dialogue
transcript, collected through documentation techniques such as repeated viewing,
transcription, and selection of crisis-related conversations. Data were analyzed
using content analysis through unitization, coding, reduction, inference, and
presentation. The findings reveal 44 illocutionary speech acts. Directives
dominated with 23 occurrences, followed by representatives (11), commissives
(6), and expressives (4), while no declaratives were found. In terms of functions,
there were 24 competitive, 12 collaborative, 5 convivial, and 3 conflictive
instances. These results highlight the crucial role of speech acts in crisis situations
as strategies to influence decisions, direct actions, and maintain safety.
