Title : EFL Students’ Anxiety Factors For Listening
Comprehension At State Islamic University Sultan
Thaha Saifuddin Jambi
This study aimed to identify and describe the factors contributing to
listening anxiety among fourth-semester EFL students at State Islamic University
Sultan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi. Using a descriptive quantitative design, the total
population of 59 students enrolled in the Academic Listening course participated in
this study. Data were collected through the Foreign Language Listening Anxiety
Scale (FLLAS) and analyzed using descriptive statistics, anxiety level
categorization, item mean analysis, and dominant factor analysis. The results
showed that most students (78.0%) experienced a moderate level of listening
anxiety, followed by 15.3% at a high level and 6.8% at a low level. Among the five
dimensions of listening anxiety, Contextual/Environmental Factors had the highest
mean score (3.54), indicating that fast speech, unfamiliar accents, and testing
situations were the most significant sources of anxiety. The findings suggested that
students’ listening anxiety was mainly influenced by external and emotional
pressures rather than linguistic limitations. The results also provided implications
for teaching strategies, curriculum design, and institutional support in reducing
listening anxiety in EFL learning.
