Self-discovery and reconciliation are important processes in identity formation and
individual psychological recovery. Self-discovery is understood as the process of
recognizing and understanding one's identity, including values, life goals, emotions, and
potential through reflection and life experiences. Meanwhile, reconciliation is the process
of restoring relationships, both with oneself and others, through acceptance and
forgiveness. This research aims to: 1) explain the types of identity as seen through main
character in the novel Beloved Toni Morrison's, 2) explore the interrelated of self-discovery
process portrayed trough main character in the novel Beloved by Toni Morrison, and 3)
describe of the aspects reconciliation in the novel Beloved by Toni Morrison. This research
uses Erik Erison's identity theory, Charles Taylor's self-discovery theory, and John Paul
Lederach's reconciliation theory as the basis of analysis. The method used is qualitative
research with a descriptive approach, while the data collection technique is done through
documentation studies. The data were analyzed based on the characters' narratives and
dialogues that represent the psychological process of self-discovery and reconciliation. The
results showed that self-discovery and reconciliation are important elements in the inner
journey of the novel's characters. Based on the theory used, the researcher identified 1) the
most dominant type of identity, namely identity conflict, 2) In the process of self-discovery,
four main processes were found: acceptance of the past, the role of social relationships,
awareness of freedom or autonomy, and symbolic or external influences. 3) In the aspects
of reconciliation, three main aspects were found: past trauma and loss, confrontation with
the past, and recognition and acceptance. These findings show that Beloved presents a deep
and complex portrait of an individual's struggle in the process of self-discovery and
attempts to reconcile with past wounds. Through the depiction of the characters' traumatic
experiences, the novel shows how one's identity is shaped by life experiences, especially
those related to suffering, loss, and oppression. The process of self-discovery and
reconciliation is presented as a difficult but important emotional and psychological journey,
which ultimately leads to inner healing and the restoration of a complete identity.
