Title : The Effect of Taboo Game as Strategy on Students’ Speaking at SMP Ahmad
Dahlan Kota Jambi

The purpose of this research was to find the significant effect and differences of
Taboo Game LED as strategy on students’ speaking ability of 7th grade students at SMP
Ahmad Dahlan Kota Jambi. The researcher applied a quasi-experimental with quantitative
method. Researcher took two classes as the sample, VII A students in experimental class
who were taught using Taboo Game LED and VII B students in a control class who were
not taught using Taboo Game LED. The researcher applied cluster sampling as sampling
technique. The data were taken based on monolog performance (speaking test) of students
in experimental and control class. In analysing the data, the researcher applied a paired
sample t-test to find whether there was a difference students’ speaking ability before and
after the treatment and also the researcher analysed the difference between the experimental

and control class by using an independent sample t-test. The results of the paired sample t-
test were showed a 2-tailed sig value of 0.000 < 0.05, this showed that Taboo Game LED

was effectively used as strategy to teach English especially speaking. Meanwhile, the result
of independent sample t-test was showed the sig (2-tailed) were 0.49 < 0.05, it means that
there is a difference between students who were taught by using Taboo Game LED and
students who were to use conventional way (conversation). The conclusion is Taboo Game
LED has a significant effect on students’ speaking ability and there was a significant
difference between students who were taught using Taboo Game LED and who were not.
