Title : Exploring EFL Students’ Challenges and Coping
Strategies in English Public Speaking (A Case Study of
English Education Students in UIN STS Jambi)

This study investigates students' challenges and coping strategies in
English public speaking. A descriptive qualitative method was used to gain the
data for the present study. As many six English students were interviewed and
participated in this study. The findings showed that there were several challenges
faced by students in conducting speaking skills. Whereas, it consisted of 1) lack of
vocabulary, 2) nervousness, 3) lack of pronunciation, 4) difficulty in managing time
efficiently, and 5) lack of grammar knowledge. In the other hand, the researcher also
found some coping strategies used by the EFL students to overcome the
challenges such as; metacognitive strategy, cognitive strategy and society
strategy. Each of strategies has its own portion to overcome problems that arise in
English public speaking. Several recommendations from the present study were
also attached for EFL students, teachers and further researchers.
