IHMAYANI VELI, 2024 : RACISM ISSUES IN SELECTED CHILDISH

Racism is the existence of differences in behavior and inequality based on
skin color, ethnicity, race, and a person's origin which resulted in limitations or
violations of a person's rights and freedoms. There were lots of songs that contained
racism, including Childish Gambino's songs. This research aimed to explain the kind
of racism that Childish Gambino experienced in his songs and explain what impact
racism had on Childish Gambino. This research used (Fredrickson, 2005) for the
theory of racism and (Rosenblatt, 2014) for the theory of the impact of racism. This
research used qualitative descriptive research. Data collection was carried out using
documentation techniques. The findings of this research showed that the researcher
found that there were three kinds of racism, namely discrimination, prejudice, and
segregation. Apart from determining the racism of the three Childish Gambino songs
analyzed, the researcher also analyzed three impacts of racism on Childish Gambino,
namely grief, rage, and humiliation. One of the songs with the most data was the song
Hold You Down, while the song This is America only had four data which was
included in discrimination and one data which was included humiliation. The song
Redbone only had one data which was included in prejudice, while other data was
taken from the song Hold You Down.
