This research aims to identify and describe YouTube Auto-Translate Indonesian
subtitles in Alice in Wonderland movie by using Koponen's translation errors and
Koller's equivalence. A translation is acceptable if the target language reader feels
the same as the source language reader. Therefore, this research focuses on
YouTube Auto-Translate of Indonesian subtitles in Alice in Wonderland movie.
This type of research is descriptive qualitative research. The researcher found 139
data from all the data containing translation errors; then, the data were divided
into six categories. The researcher found that the most dominant translation error
is the omitted concept. Furthermore, there are two categories of equivalence in
those translation error, and the most dominant is denotative equivalence. Based on
the data, the translation of this movie exhibits a remarkably high rate of errors.
These errors render the subtitles in the target language non-equivalent, and the
YouTube Auto-Translate feature is not recommended for users who require a high
translation quality due to its limitations that make the quality of the captions may
vary.
