Gayle Forman’s Figurative Language Style in
The Novel Just One Day: Intertextual Study

Figurative language is one of the semantic studies used by a writer to convey
messages imaginatively. Intertextual is a study that is used to find the relationship
of meaning between one text and another text. The objects of this research study
were (1) analyze the types of figurative language in the novel Just One Day and (2)
looking for intertextuality and the influence of Shakespeare's works on the novel
Just One Day, especially in figurative language. The researcher used X.J Kennedy's
theory to identify the types of figurative language found in the novel and Julia
Kristeva's theory to analyze the intertextuality and influence of Shakespeare on
figurative language and stories in the novel Just One Day. This study used a
qualitative descriptive analysis. The data sources for this research are the novel Just
One Day and the play As You Like It by Shakespeare. Researcher used data
reduction techniques, data display, and drawing conclusions in analyzing the data.
The results of this study were: first, the researcher found several types of figurative
language, namely 58 metaphors, 76 similes, 27 personifications, 19 apostrophes, 14
hyperboles, 36 metonymy, 6 synecdoche, 57 paradoxes. Second, the intertextual
relationship and influence of Shakespeare on the novel Just One Day, especially in
figurative language. The researcher found an influence on theme, character
development, plot, place setting, and language style. The intertextual relationship
found in the use of language style is the modification of previous text writing to the
context of the current sentence. The author develops the context of the sentences in
the previous text into a current text with almost the same theme or context.
