students, and it is suitable reason why the researcher doing this research to English
students which even already learned about pronunciation but still have a problem
with the pronunciation. In this study, the researcher conducted this research on
students from English literature department at UIN STS Jambi to find out whether
errors in pronunciation often occur, and what types of errors are based on existing
theories, then researcher also find out what causes these errors to be often made.
The researcher uses qualitative methods in collecting the data and the data obtained
is primary where the researcher directly takes from the participants. Regarding to
the types of error in silent letter, the researcher use the main theory by Taylor
(1997). In this study, it can be found that students from English Literature
department at UIN STS Jambi make quite a lot of mistakes in reading words that
contain silent letters. There are 81 pronunciation errors in the silent letter “b” and
59 errors in silent letter “u” with a total of 140 errors out of 300 pronunciation. The
researcher also find that the types of errors that existed in the participants were pre-
systematic errors and post-systematic errors. The most common type of error that
occurs is the post systematic error where this error can occur because the learner
knows the correct reading rules but reads them inconsistently.
