Title : The Effectiveness of Impromptu Speech Method on
Students’ English-Speaking Fluency at State Islamic
University Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi
The study examined the effect of impromptu speech method on the English-
speaking fluency of students at the State Islamic University of Sulthan Thaha
Saifuddin Jambi. A quantitative method with quasi-experimental design was used
in this study. The sample consisted of 34 second semester students divided into two
groups: an experimental group taught using the impromptu speaking method and a
control group taught using a traditional memorization-based method. Data were
collected through pretest and posttest speaking assessments that focused on fluency.
The results showed that both groups showed improvement in speaking fluency.
Although the independent t-test results did not show a statistically significant
difference between the posttest scores of the two groups, the effect size indicated a
greater impact in the experimental class. The study recommends that future research
explore the long-term effects of impromptu speaking activities with larger and more
diverse samples to better determine their impact on students’ fluency and
confidence in speaking.
