Abstract

The requirement of covering one's aurat (private parts) is an obligation in
Islam for Muslim women, which entails covering the entire body except the face
and hands. The use of a veil, such as a cadar or niqab, is a part of the jilbab
(modest clothing) that is used to cover the face. However, individuals who wear a
cadar may experience difficulties in social interactions due to their distinctive
appearance compared to the majority of people.
This study adopts a descriptive qualitative approach and was conducted in
the Department of Hadith Studies at the Faculty of Ushuluddin and Religious
Studies, UIN Sultan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi. The aim of this research is to assess
the impact of wearing a cadar (veil) on social interactions. The subjects of the
study were female students in the Hadith Studies program who wear a cadar
within the campus environment. Data collection methods employed in this study
included observation, interviews, and documentation.
The results of this study indicate that female students in the Hadith Studies
program at the Faculty of Ushuluddin and Religious Studies, who wear a cadar,
are driven by intrinsic motivations, while extrinsic motivations are influenced by
family, friends, and institutional regulations. Their patterns of interaction vary and
are influenced by individual characteristics, as they tend to be more reserved and
limit interactions with new people and the opposite gender. The environment in
the Faculty of Ushuluddin and Religious Studies holds positive perceptions.
However, the research also found that the use of a cadar can have negative
impacts on social interactions, such as difficulties in eating in public,
communication, and the presence of negative stigma. Therefore, it is important for
female students who wear a cadar to wisely overcome negative stigma and
transform it into a positive experience for personal growth and life experiences.
