This qualitative case study investigates lecturers’ strategies in teaching
speaking skills and the challenges faced at the English Education Study Program of
UIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi. Involving three lecturers selected via
purposive sampling, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and
observations, then analyzed thematically. The findings reveal five key strategies
employed by lecturers: modeling and imitation, group/pair work, audio-visual
media usage, project-based activities, and specific feedback techniques.
Meanwhile, the major challenges identified include students' psychological barriers
(low confidence and motivation), linguistic limitations (vocabulary), technical
facility constraints, and classroom management issues. This study concludes that
while lecturers utilize varied strategies to enhance speaking skills, they must
simultaneously navigate significant internal and external obstacles.
